United were in hot pursuit of the men from Anfield and goals from Rod Belfitt
and Mick Jones saw them leapfrog Liverpool and go top of the League. United had
trailed Liverpool mainly due to postponements and just
prior to this game they had been three points adrift with two games in hand.
They had beaten Queens Park Rangers to leave them one point behind with a game
in hand. Now they needed to beat Ipswich to take the
lead and this they did to put them one point in front with equal games played.
Such was their dominance for the rest of the season that they were never headed
again and went on to win the championship for the first time.
